Rare cancer GIST

My dad has been diagnosed with cancer for the third time this time a GIST tumour which was apparently missed when he was being treated for bowel cancer. We were told that due to his age (80) the advice would be to go on maintenance scans to check for growth as they are slow growing. Currently not able to be resected as too big and in an awkward place which would need full stomach and partial oesophagus removal. Latest scans have shown a double in size and spread to liver. They have now advised to start imatinib. Has anyone got any experience of these kinds of tumours and their spread?

Thanks

  • Hi Butterfly55 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear your dad has been diagnosed with cancer for a third time, which was missed when he was being treated for bowel cancer. This must be a very difficult time for you both.

All our support is being sent your way Butterfly55 and we hope all goes well for your dad when he starts taking imatinib.
