Preventative Surgery to remove both ovaries and fallopian tubes: I have mutation of BRCA2 gene

Hi I am waiting for preventative surgery to remove both ovaries and fallopian tubes and a total hysterectomy to reduce my risk of getting ovarian cancer, womb cancer/cervical cancer due to my sister having been diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer and us being tested as positive to having a mutation of our BRCA2 gene.  Has anyone else had this surgery or is waiting for the surgery?

  • Hi Naturelover54,

What an anxious time it must be for you as you are waiting for your preventative surgery to remove both ovaries and fallopian tubes and a total hysterectomy to reduce your chance of getting ovarian cancer, womb cancer or cervical cancer. It's such a difficult step to have to take but it's one that can be life saving and I am so sorry that your sister was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. It's good though that you found out you have the mutation to your BRCA2 gene - knowledge is power really and now you can take action to minimise your risk of developing these cancers. There is interesting information on our website on inherited genes and cancer types and on our Cancer News page, there is a great inspirational article about three women with BRCA gene mutations sharing their experiences. I also hope that you will hear from the experiences of others here on Cancer Chat who also have been told they had a mutation of the BRCA2 gene and who have had preventative surgery and have now come out the other side of it.

I have had a little look for you on the forum and I have found this BRCA2 mutation thread by  - this member was also told she had the BRCA2 gene mutation and posted a few months ago and was looking to hear from other ladies in a similar situation who had had a mastectomy or ovary/fallopian tubes removal. Don't hesitate to drop her a line on her thread if you would like to connect. Perhaps by now this member will have been offered the surgery and might be able to tell you more about what to expect.

You can also call our nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk things through with them - the helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Waiting for an appointment date is not easy and I hope that it all goes well for you.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Thank you so very much for your message Lucie.  It is really appreciated and thank you for looking on the forum for links that would interest me.  I will definitely reach out to Fluffychick.

  • Hi hello there.

I came here, to this chat forum, due to my prostate being, kinda, kaput. Metasta...

Anyway, I'm sorry that you are, I mean some of your genes have / are mutating.

About 15 years ago I came across a book ~ Eating Pomegranates ~ by Sarah so&so, I forget her second name...it's a very funny (though of course, sad) book... IMHO, definitely worth a read... It might help you to be a touch more resilient to all that you are going through.

You may have already come across this book, read it etc. Please do again.

    Peace. Happiness.
