Going through supporting someone whilst on placement

To whom this may concern,

I am a second year student nurse and recently whilst on a dermatology placement, my dad had an appointment there to have a lump on his back checked out and was then diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma and basal cell carcinoma that is widespread, what questions should I ask so I can be as prepared as I can be because I don't want to let him down and I also need to finish the rest of this year he has an appointment to talk through treatment options and I don't know what I should be asking and I start my last clinical placement on Monday,  I've worked incredibly hard to get to where I am and I know he knows how important it is for me to do this, I guess I just need some advice and a place to get it out there so any advice would be greatly appreciated

Kind Regards

  • Hello Studentnursey

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. It's understandable that this is a worrying time for you all, and natural that you want to be able to support your Dad in the best way that you can.

We have some information on our website about melanoma that you may find helpful, as well as information for family, friends and carers. You might find it useful to chat things through with one of our nurses as well. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can, as well as help you think about any questions that you want to ask the specialists. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I'm sure that your Dad would want you to continue working hard with your course but do let your personal tutor know what is going on regarding your Dad so that they can ensure you're being well supported as well.

Sending you both my best wishes,
