What is 'normal' for the number of bowel cancer biopsies taken?

Hello,

My husband had a colonoscopy yesterday and although they only told him of a large tumour in his rectum, they took 9 biopsies.  This sounds like an awful lot, which is making me think there must be other tumours elsewhere in the bowel or colon.

Has anyone else been through anything similar please, to advise how many biopsies are 'normal'? We're currently in a holding pattern waiting for scans and a plan to be told to us.

Thank you in advance
