Dad’s in surgery now for tongue cancer. His operation could take up to 12 hours. So worried and don't know what to do with myself

Hi, just hoping there’s people who can reassure me today.
my dad was diagnosed with tongue cancer 4 weeks ago and he’s just gone in for his 8 hour surgery but 5 minutes before going to theatre he was told his heart isn’t functioning fully and now it’s going to be a riskier and much slower procedure and could take up to 12 hours. I don’t know what to do with myself and how worried I should now be with the heart situation. Urgh just feel sick and was obviously worrying about recovery as he will struggle with talking, eating etc for a long time but now that’s not important he just needs to be ok with this long procedure now :(

  • Hello Catlover10

I'm sorry to hear about the issues that were flagged with your Dad's heart just before his surgery earlier this week. It sounds like it was an incredibly anxious time for you all, and I can understand that the waiting must have been difficult.

I hope that your Dad is being kept comfortable and well cared for since his surgery. Try to take each day at a time and not think too far ahead, as that will likely leave you feeling more anxious about things.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses at any point, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

I hope your Dad's recovery progresses well Catlover10. Keep in touch and let us know how you're both doing.

    Best wishes,
