Will I need to take time off while my husband has radiotherapy?

Hi, my husband has been diagnosed with oropharangeal cancer (based on of tongue). He will need radiotherapy 5x a week. Is it reasonable to expect that he will be able to go to hospital visits by himself or will this be too much? Will he be ok at home by himself or should I take time off work?
I know no-one has a crystal ball but I am interested to hear how anyone else coped in this position. Thanks

  • Ive had radiotherapy to the jaw and neck. It was OK for the first 2 weeks and drove to the appointments the 3rd week was tougher the last week Id say definitely to drive him there. The week after treatment ended was the worst.

    Hope this is helpful.

  • Agreed - I had it for my bowel. By week 3 I was defo tiring. Week 5 I ended up as inpatient for short while. I was taking oral Chemo at the time.

I think the daily visits really take it out of you after a couple of weeks There is often free transport available (Firefly around South Yorks). As for time off for company at home - maybe less likely. My wife took time off post surgery which I really needed - more mentally than physically though.
