Support for Mum

How is it possible to get help for Mum who is 80?  She has oesphogal malignancy and pending confirmation of stomach cancer.

She is very weak, struggling to eat. Has lost 20% of her body weight in 6 months and is getting by on glasses of warm milk and a muller yoghurt each day.  Reablement care from a recent stay in hospital is due to end on Monday. They say that as she can walk (about 20 m) she doesn't need their help and can manage at home.  She is a widow.   My brother is local but works away in the week, my sister and I live 200 miles away.

I guess we are between between confirmed diagnosis

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.  I've a meeting with reablement tomorrow and was going to call her GP again but struggling as to where to go next.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi SallyAnd and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear your mum has oesophageal malignancy and is currently waiting for a stomach cancer diagnosis.

This must be a very upsetting and difficult time for you all, especially with her reablement care coming to an end. I do hope the meeting with the reablement team went well the other day, but if you need further information and advice, then you can give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very experienced and will do all they can to answer your questions and assist you further.

I hope this information we have on our website about the different types of support that are available at home will prove useful as well.

I'm sure some of our members who have been in a similar position with their loved ones will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but in the meantime, we're thinking of you SallyAnd and sending all our strength and support to you and your family.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
