My mother in law very weak

Hi my mother in law was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer last year we got the all clear rang the bell then three months later she kept feeling dizzy and falling over. She now has metastatic brain cancer she has had three days intense radiation and since then she is so poorly can’t walk can’t eat she has been withdrawn off the steroids and is now back in hospital all scans show the radiation done what it has meant to and can’t see it anywhere else but no one can understand why she is so weak and won’t eat they told us today she has 4-6 months left if she don’t eat and they going to send her home. Is this the right thing to be doing my father in law is 77 and struggles to lift her alone etc she will have the full carers package but we are scared :( and confused if we can get her to eat does that mean she will live longer so confused

  • Hi Claire83,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to hear of the situation with your mother in law, this sounds very difficult and I can understand it must be worrying.

Regarding your last question, it's important that you discuss this with her doctor if you haven't already, as they will be best placed to advise, and it's important that you know what to potentially expect.

Do also discuss with them the support options that are available to you, as well as any other questions you may have.

You may wish to talk this through with one of our nurses. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

I hope you're able to get more information soon.

We are always here for support whenever you may need it. Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
