Advice on preventative brain radiotherapy

My mum has been offered preventative brain radiotherapy, has anyone had any experience with this and the side effects?
they have told us it may cause cognitive memory loss  unsure how severe this could be or if there are any other side effects?

My mum is 77 has a diagnosis of small cell lung cancer, we found it very early and she had the central lobe of her lung removed successfully, she then had a round of chemo and got the all clear for almost a year. The cancer then returned on her back and there is something on her chest, they had a second round of chemo and she is about to start radiotherapy on her chest & back but now doctors have also suggested pri therapy to help prevent the cancer cells spreading to the brain. I am really worried it affects her memory and personality but feel if we don’t do it there is a high chance of the cancer spreading to her brain and that is the one place she has said she doesn’t want it to go to. Does anyone have any advice or more information on this preventive procedure?

  • Hi Angjr and welcome to Cancer Chat.

We have some information about having radiotherapy to the brain on our website but hopefully some of our members who have had this done, or cared for someone who has, will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

I hope the information I've provided will be useful but if it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease about your mum having this treatment.

This must be a very difficult time for you both, but we are sending you all our support and wishing your mum all the best with her treatment.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph, I have read the information above and found it very informative & a bit reassuring it’s just the fear of the unknown isn’t it. I think we have to give it a try and just hope mum doesn’t get too many side effects.
