My Dad has just been diagnosed with AML

My Dad (75) had just been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He is in generally poor health so it appears treatment options are limited. We are awaiting further tests for I think genetic or mutation indications. I have no idea of a prognosis and reading the internet is really scary. What should I be expecting and how can I support him. I believe we can get a blue badge so it’s easier getting him to treatments etc. is there any other support we can get? Thanks so much

  • Hi LangSolo and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear your dad has been diagnosed with AML and that his treatment options may be limited due to his health.

This must be a very difficult time, but I'm glad you've joined us LangSolo as so many of our members will know what you're going through at the moment, so you are not alone, and I'm sure it won't be long until some of them stop by to offer their support and advice.

We have some information on how to support someone with cancer and what financial support your dad may be entitled to on our website, but if you'd like to discuss any of this further with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We know the journey ahead will be tough but I hope you can take some strength, and comfort, from knowing that we will be by your side every step of the way.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
