Elderly father with brain tumour

Hi,

my 85 year old father has been diagnosed with a large frontal lobe glioma.  The doctors have not given us any treatment options and instead have prescribed dexamethasone.  Initially they gave him less than 3 months as a prognosis but he had been discharged with supportive care and his symptoms have nearly all disappeared.  I know the steroids only reduce the swelling, not the tumour, but I really don’t know what to expect now.  Does this mean the initial <3 months is likely to improve?  How long will the Dexamethasone work against the swelling?  I’d appreciate any thoughts.  Thank you

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Chanter65,
I’m sorry to hear about your father’s diagnosis and I can only imagine how challenging this time must be for both you and your family.
It’s reassuring to hear that his symptoms have improved with the dexamethasone, though I completely understand that it can leave you feeling uncertain about what comes next. Every person’s experience is unique, and while it’s difficult to predict exactly how things will unfold, your father’s medical team will be the best source of guidance, as they are familiar with the specifics of his situation.
This forum is a great place to connect with others who may have gone through similar experiences, and I hope you find some comfort in sharing your story and hearing from others who can offer support.
If you ever feel the need to talk things through or have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our nurses at 0808 800 4040. They’re available Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sending strength to you and your father.
    Best wishes,
