The wait & symptoms worrying me

My mum (69) was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer just before Xmas. A routine mammogram picked up the small tumour, the prognosis at the first consultation was positive. Breast conserving surgery then radiotherapy.

she had the surgery first week of Jan, they took a SLNB and we’ve heard nothing since. I thought the biopsy results would be back by now and put our minds at rest.

sadly she has a lot of other health issues, a serious prolapse bowel, diverticulitis and a haitus hernia so no stranger to aches and pains, only now we have the breast cancer diagnosis I’m feeling very anxious. She’s started saying her hips hurt and she’s been laid up in pain, blaming ‘sleeping funny’ she’s lost a lot of weight since the diagnosis. (Something she’s pleased about!)

i just keep thinking what if it’s spread to her bones, being in poor health wouldn’t that make her more susceptible? She doesn’t want to ‘trouble’ anyone with her symptoms, after surgery she had terrible diahorrea and upon calling our surgery for help was told she was ‘really using the NHS’ which knocked her sideways. So now she just puts up and shuts up.

perhaps I should advocate for her? I get the feeling she’s in denial now and doesn’t want anyone to talk about it.

  • Hi Dinahdear,

What a worrying time it must be for you and your mum! As it's been a month since the surgery and you haven't heard anything back after the sentinel lymph node biopsy, it would be a good idea perhaps to get in touch with the hospital to try and find out if those important results have now come through. It sounds like the cancer was caught early if it is at stage 1 and these other aches and pains are making you understandably anxious and it's normal to worry about these symptoms and it's important to flag these whether they are related to her cancer or not so that she can get some help for these painful hip issues. No one should ever have told her that she was using the NHS too much and she has every right to get anything she is concerned about checked and she shouldn't have to just put up with her pain and symptoms.

I am sure she appreciates how lucky she is to have you by her side and hopefully you will manage to get some answers very soon and you will make sure that anything you are concerned about, the weight loss, all the pains and aches are properly looked into and investigated. Keeping everything crossed for her!

    Best wishes,
