My partner is having chemo for stage 2 bowel cancer. It feels like he's become someone I don't know. I don't know what to do

Out of the blue was told my partner had stage 2 bowel cancer. It had also spread to lymph nodes..  after a successful op but also very major he is now having chemotherapy. I had been with him by his side every step of the way but now he has turned into someone I don't know. The way he speaks to me is almost like he hates me and I am at all loss of what to do

  • Hello Leuan03

I'm sorry to hear about your partner's diagnosis and that after a successful surgery, he is now undergoing further treatment. It sounds like it's been a really difficult time for you both.

I know that we've had many members post here in the Cancer Chat community over the years sharing stories where the relationship between themselves and their loved one has changed after a cancer diagnosis. It's understandable that you're feeling lost in all of this.

Have you tried to speak with your partner about your concerns? Sometimes this can be a difficult conversation to have and it's important to try not to blame each other but it's likely that you're both experiencing lots of stresses and struggles and that is why it's important to try and keep good communication channels open.

We do have some information on our website for family, friends and carers that may be of help to you but you might also want to give one of our nurses a call to talk with them for some advice. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your partner's treatment progresses well Leuan03 and that things begin to improve for you both.

Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
