Stage 4 lung cancer treatment

My mum in law was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in August. In October she had chemo but after 1st session ended up in hospital for 2 weeks with an infection. Oncologist said she was to weak for chemo but she did have 5 sessions of palliative radiotherapy which has really helped with her breathing although she is still very tired. She visited her oncologist 14 December and he was happy with the radiotherapy and booked to see her end of February. This seems a long time without treatment I know they talk about quality of life are  they anticipating she will never have anymore chemo? She was referred for chemo the day after diagnosis but now it seems quite relaxed and no rush for her to have further treatment.

  • It's great to hear your mum in law has responded well to her 5 sessions of palliative radiotherapy Jen-jo. This must have been wonderful news to receive, although I can understand your concerns about her going so long without further treatment and not seeing her oncologist again until the end of Feb.

Unfortunately I can't answer the questions you have about the chemo but you're very welcome to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday (except Christmas Eve and the other remaining Bank Holidays for the year) between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to offer some insight and put your mind at ease about the chemo and length of time to her next appointment.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon as well.

    Kind regards,
