Facial lymphoedema following throat cancer

Hi I'm wondering if anyone has any advice.

My brother is a cancer survivor of 10 years. Throat and lung cancer. He makes us proud everyday. However he is currently suffering dreadfully with facial lymphoedema. His face is so swollen, he can hardly talk and is very down. He has been told to massage his face but so far we haven't see any improvements. He has recieved an appointment for a specialist but it's not until April next year... we're just not sure where to turn next.

  • Hello SashaC,

I'm sorry to hear about your brother's lymphoedema. If you haven't done so already, it might be helpful to find out from the doctor what can be done while you wait for the appointment with the specialist. There is also some guidance on our website around lymphoedema, which I hope is useful.

All the best to you and him,

  • My Dad had cancer of his tongue. He had a radical operation where 45% tongue was amputated, tumours further down his throat (still on his tongue) were removed along with lymph nodes in his neck.

My dad unfortunately also suffered with lymphodema and obviously compression bandaging not an option with the face. He eventually saw lymphodema nurse and was advised to use tape (kinesiology tape) to help drain the fluid. It took some time but it worked.

I hope your brother is doing ok.
