89 year old mum starting targeted Acalabrutanib

My 89 year old Mum has been diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leaukemia for 14 years and had first line chemotherapy treatment 5 years ago which put her in remission until September this year.

Mum now requires targeted treatment with Acalabrutanib for her stage C CLL.

Has anyone any experience of taking this drug I want to help her through this as much as I can .

I don't have any idea of the prognosis but would like to hear anyone's experience of the treatment either first hand or as a carer/ relative .

Thank you in advance for any replies.

  • Hi AndreaD,

Thank you for coming here and sharing your mum's story of living with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia for so many years. I am sorry to hear that your mum is no longer in remission and requires targeted treatment with acalabrutinib for her CLL. You can find information on our website on acalabrutinib which I hope you will find helpful but as you say, there's nothing quite like hearing from other people's first hand experiences of this treatment or from the experiences of others who like you looked after a loved one who took acalabrutinib. Obviously your mum may have a very different reaction to treatment from that of others who took it amongst members of our community as we all react to such treatments differently but it's always interesting to hear from others who have also taken acalabrutanib.

I had a little look around the forum and looked for past threads from members of our community who had this treatment and I found this thread from 3 months ago from  who mentioned being on acalabrutinib tablets. I have also spotted a member of our forum with the username   who mentioned in their profile description being diagnosed in 2018 with CLL and starting in 2024 second line treatment of acalabrutinib. I hope that you will be chatting here soon with others who have taken this targeted cancer treatment.

You are also always welcome to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 if there is anything you would like to ask them about the treatment or if you simply want to talk things through with them. Their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that your mum will be able to start treatment soon and that it is effective and improves things for her.

    Best wishes,
