LACK OF PASTORAL CARE

I first posted here in October when we received the shocking and unexpected diagnosis that my husband has terminal oesophageal cancer. We have a single child together - a son who is 18-years old and who is  forced to live the next 50-60 years without his hero Dad. We are beyond heartbroken .

I am writing again to express my surprise and disappointment at the lack of pastoral care for families like ours. I had assumed that emotional and psychological services would be available for cancer patients and their families - particularly those like my husband who are terminally ill. Someone in my first post recommended Maggie's and I attended once and was so grateful for their support and compassion. The centre is circa 15-miles from home but I hope to utilise their services again.

What are other people’s experiences who are also facing the most challenging trauma of our lives - not just the agony and decline of our loved one from cancer, but the devastation of living our lives without them? Thank you.

  • We were lucky, my wife was referred by MacMillan for counselling when I was diagnosed with stage 4 OC.
It wasn’t really for her, but at least we had the option.
Everyone makes the right noises about offering holistic services but the reality is far different from the rhetoric.
