Advice - who can help with support at home for cancer? Mum's stage 4 lung cancer has spread and she wants to be at home.

Who else can help and support with cancer at home. My mum has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that has spread. 3 weeks ago. They said she is too ill for chemo. Where do I go for support as she doesn’t meet the thread hold for macmillian and the go have said it quite advanced for them. She wanted to be at home and I understand that but where do I get the help. Watching her tired, in pain and frustrated is hard and she has only been home 4 days.

  • Hello Jms_

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and how difficult things have become for her.

This is often a difficult time for patients and their families when they are too unwell for treatment but not unwell enough to be able to access hospice support. Please do speak with your Mum's GP surgery and explain that your Mum needs support to be able to remain at home. It may be that your Mum needs to access care services (that are not provided by the local palliative care service) to help her remain at home and stay safe. Your GP surgery should be able to give advice about how this can be rearranged.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that your Mum is able to access the support she needs soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Ask the doctors if immunotherapy is suitable for your mother. I was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer 8 years ago and  was treated with pembrolizumab.

  • Have you tried Social Services.  Also The Palliative care team should be able to signpost.  We have a couple of cancer charities who work very closely with the NHS and social services.  They are amazing.

  • Community nurses , carers and even a sitting service is usually available, as well as a community dietician , community physics, etc ask her GP for a referral to community nurses, if still in hospital ensure they have referred before going home
