Can i get a little advice please

My mother in law had a left breast mastectomy 8weeks ago and also had 3 lymph nodes removed for testing. The breast cancer she had was malignant but not metastasised,so not spreading. After 8weeks she still hasn't had any results back from the lymph nodes that were taken for sampling and as a result she is starting to feel anxious as the clinic still hasn't had the results back yet. I myself feel that this is probably a good thing as I'm pretty certain she would of heard something if she had needed further treatment but she is 82yrs old and is worried. Is this time frame normal? Is it a good or bad sign? Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

  • HI Ezy,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear about your mother-in-law's diagnosis and can understand her concern that her lymph node results are not back after 8 weeks. Times can vary, but most of these results are back within about 2 weeks. They are usually returned at the same time as her post-surgery results. Has she phoned her consultant's secretary? I would advise her to do this and ask whether or not her results are back yet, If not, ask when they expect them to be back?

Unfortunately, there is not usually any difference in the time frame, irrespective of the outcome, so it is definitely worth chasing them up.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Ezy,

I am sorry to hear this. Sometimes, we have to fight our own corner with cancer. Next time she phones, make sure that she asks when they expect them to be back. If she doesn't get a satisfactory answer, she could phone her breast care nurse and ask for her help in chasing the results up.

    Kind regards,
