My husband has advanced oesophageal cancer

Hi so my husband has been diagnosed with advanced oesophageal cancer, with mets to liver and abdomen also with a suspicion in the cervical lymph.

We are 4 weeks in oncology appointment next week and still feel in limbo

He is fully independent so I am not a carer although have currently taken time off sick.

I am devastated and I am so emotional I think I am making it worse for him but he was so fit and well and still is really so the shock is palpable

  • Hi Sasie,

I am so sorry to hear that your husband has been diagnosed with advanced oesophageal cancer with mets to liver and abdomen. The news must have hit you hard and it's normal to feel in limbo in a situation like this. The oncology appointment should help you understand a bit better what to expect in the coming weeks and what the treatment plan might be. You might be interested in reading our information on advanced oesophageal cancer   and on treatment for oesophageal cancer  which I hope will help you prepare for the oncology appointment.

It is normal to be emotional after getting this devastating news but I just wanted to reassure you this is a normal reaction and you are not making it worse for him. I am sure he appreciates having your support and the fact that you have currently taken time off sick to be by his side. This is a difficult time for both of you and you're bound to have more questions at the moment than answers and many worries and concerns and I wanted you to know we are all here for you as are our cancer nurses whom you are welcome to ring on this free number 0808 800 4040 - the helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I will now let our lovely members come and say hello. Sometimes it helps to talk to others who also have advanced oesophageal cancer and who may be further ahead in treatment. For example  posted this thread 3 months ago about being diagnosed with advanced oesophageal cancer and could be a good person for you to chat to at the moment so don't hesitate to respond to their thread if you would like to do so.

Best wishes to you and your husband - let us know how the appointment with the oncologist goes next week and what they say.
