84 year old recently diagnosed with throat cancer

Hi, looking for some advice. Gran 84 has recently been diagnosed with throat cancer. Symptoms were weight loss and feeling like food was getting stuck in her throat. Diagnosed 4 weeks ago but the last two days she’s being sick. So no nutrition for two days. Had a coffee today and brought it straight back up, sipping water now.  Dr has advised they will urgently refer her for a stent in her throat but a little worried about the sickness. Thanks

  • A very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat community Cherylliam86 although I'm sorry to hear your Gran has diagnosed with throat cancer and  has recently starting being sick.

I know this must be a very scary and stressful time, especially when you've seen your Gran be sick, but it's good to hear she's being urgently referred for a stent to help relieve her symptoms. Hopefully she won't have to wait too long for this, but if you're worried about the sickness in the meantime, make sure you speak to her medical team as they will be in the best position to advise.

We have some general information about cancer and sickness on our website, but if you'd like to discuss your Gran's situation with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to help. If you are ever in need of urgent advice, the NHS is always available on 111.

I do hope things have improved slightly for your Gran since making this post Cherylliam86, and that you receive some support and advice from our members soon.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi...my lovley dad is 84 and has been diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. His poor voice is fading fast and sometimes he struggles to swallow food. Off to the consultant on Friday to figure out a plan of action.  I feel sick..
