Oesophageal cancer

My partner has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. My son and myself are finding it hard, is there any counselling I could get for my son

  • Hello Shoneill5

I'm so very sorry to hear about your partner's diagnosis. Undoubtedly this will have been difficult news to hear and it's understandable that you are all finding things very hard at the moment.

I'm unsure from your post how old your son is. If he's still in education then you can speak with the school or college which should have counselling support available for your son. If he's older and no longer in education then you have a few options. If there is a Maggie's centre in your locality then you can contact them. if your partner is having support from the local palliative care team or hospice then do speak to your contact there as they may be able to signpost you to services that are available in your local area. If none of these suggestions are helpful then talking with your GP surgery for advice would be the next step.

If you would like to talk with one of our team of nurses for some advice and support you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any help they can.

I also wanted to give you this link to another thread on the forum where lots of members who have experience with oesophageal cancer have shared their stories and supported each other.

I hope that you are all being well supported by family and friends as well as the health professionals involved in your husband's care.

Keep in touch if it helps to have a safe space to ask questions, chat with others who understand or simply put down your thoughts and feelings in writing. We're here for you Shoneill5.

Sending you all my best wishes,
