Lung cancer and coughing

Hi my mom has stage 4 small cell lung cancer which has spread to her liver and kidneys. She's had two rounds of Chemo but she is having no more as the cancer is spreading so fast.

She has suffered with chest infections which always seem to start when she has coughed up blood. Is this normal? I presume it's normal to cough up blood if you have lung cancer, but is it normal for this to cause an infection. They really seem to knock her about and ends up in hospital having antibiotics through IV. Is there anything we can do to help prevent infection re occurring because she seems to be on antibiotics more than she isn't.

Are long-term antibiotics something which may be considered in this case?

Hospital is the last place she wants to be and her past two visits have ended up being positive for covid too.

  • Hello Karen_46

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and the difficulties she's been experiencing with repeated infections. It's understandable that you want to try to make things as easy and comfortable for her as possible.

Does your Mum have any input from the local palliative care team? Or does she have a cancer specialist nurse that you have contact details for? I'd suggest giving them a call to talk through your concerns and ask about any additional medications that may be beneficial for her. If she doesn't have contact details for either of these services then do get in touch with her GP surgery.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses first then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can. You might also want to look at our website's information about metastatic lung cancer

I hope that you're able to keep Mum from needing any further hospital admissions.

    Best wishes,
