Radiotherapy with IBD

My husband has IBD for which he was diagnosed more than 40 years ago. At the moment it is well controlled. In April this year (2024) he had a radical prostatectomy but since surgery his PSA has continued to rise. He  has been referred to an oncologist with a possibility of having salvage radiotherapy. Is there anyone on this site who also has IBD and has had radiotherapy and what side effects did you get?

Thanks

  • Hello Lorraine61

I'm sorry to hear that your husband still has a rising PSA since his surgery earlier this year. It's understandable given his history of IBD that you both have some concerns about the possible recommendation of radiotherapy.

I can't see any posts from other members on the forum who have mentioned undergoing radiotherapy whilst living with IBD but hopefully, someone will see your post and share their experiences with you.

In the meantime, I'd suggest writing down a list of any questions and concerns that you have so that you can raise these with the Oncologist when you have the appointment. You might also find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses who will be happy to offer any advice and support they can. They may also be able to help you think about any additional questions you want to ask the specialists. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that the team will be able to help improve your husband's health with minimal side effects from the treatment. Keep in touch and let us know how he gets on.

    Best wishes,

I think it will be a good idea for us to make a list of questions for when we see the oncologist (still waiting for an appointment).

I think I have more concerns than my husband! He just wants to get the cancer cells out of his body. This is his second cancer. He had a thyroidectomy for cancer in 2015. We have been told that radiotherapy is contraindicated for IBD but I am hoping with improved technology this may be an option for him
