Myeloma with blood transfusions

My husband is very secretive about his illness, and he moved away to separate from me, so I have no idea of his current symptoms. However I know he needs blood transfusions every 6 weeks,, his legs swell up so he is on strong diuretics, he walks slowly and is usually out of breath, he has damaged heart valves, he has prostrate cancer which has spread to his pelvic bone. The last blood transfusion took all day. So I wonder how bad this condition is, and I worry about the fact that he refuses to give any detail of prognosis. That's why I am trying to find out on this forum.

  • Hello eleighwater,

A warm welcome to our forum and I am sorry to hear your husband is going through all this at the moment. If I understood rightly and judging from the title of your thread, your husband has myeloma and as a result of this requires blood transfusions but he also has prostate cancer which has spread to his pelvic bone. It is really hard for anyone to give you any accurate idea about prognosis as this can be very difficult to predict and there will be other factors to take into account such as his medical history but we have detailed information on our website on myeloma  and also about advanced prostate cancer which I hope you will find helpful and which will help you understand the conditions your husband has been diagnosed with.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been affected by myeloma and that they will be able to tell you more based on their personal experiences. Feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to answer questions you might have about myeloma or prostate cancer.

I hope this helps a little and best wishes,
