Need help with brothers mental health

My Brother was diagnosed with hairy cell leukaemia in July, has had numerous pints of blood and just finished his first set or chemotherapy injections, he’s doing very well but he just can’t see past the anxiety.

He lives on his own with his dog and struggles with being on his own to be left in his own headspace, family go round as much as possible but it’s never enough and we just can’t reassure him enough, just wondering if anyone could offer any advice.

  • Hello Dramamam

I'm sorry to hear about your brother's diagnosis and that despite his first round of treatment going well he's struggling with his mental health. It's understandable that you're all feeling worried about him.

It is common to struggle with your mental health when you have cancer and there's lots of support and help available if your brother is prepared to reach out or to let you ask for support on his behalf. You might find it helpful to read through the information we have on our website about mental health and cancer

If he's willing to make an appointment to discuss his anxiety with his GP that could also be really beneficial. This may be something that you can support him with. He can also talk with his cancer nurse specialist who should know what support services are available in his local area.

If you, or your brother, would like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that your brother is able to access the help and support he needs and that his treatment continues to progress well.

    Best wishes,
