Fatigue and Stage 4 Metastatic Kidney Cancer

Hubby had kidney cancer 20 years ago.  Surgery declared him cancer free.  He has now been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer with tumours on his adrenal gland, pancreas and lung.  He is having immunotherapy - he is 6 months in.  He has done quite well with the treatment - all three tumours have "considerably shrunk" since diagnosis.  He has another scan next week to see how this is going.  Main problem for him is the fatigue.  He's always been active, running, going to the gym and now he is constantly exhausted.  He doesn't sleep well at night either.  I tell him to have a "siesta" in the afternoon but he says if he does that he is afraid he won't sleep at all at night.  Anyone have any ideas?  Dealt with this themselves.  Thanks

  • Hello MileApo15,

I am so sorry to hear that your husband's kidney cancer has come back 20 years later and that it has spread and tumours have been found on his adrenal gland, pancreas and lung. It's great that he has done well with the immunotherapy treatment and the three tumours have considerably shrunk since diagnosis. I hope that the scan next week goes well and that things continue to progress well for him.

The fatigue must be really hard for him to deal with especially if he used to be so active running and going to the gym and your suggestion of having a siesta in the afternoon is a good one especially if he doesn't sleep well at night but I understand his concerns that sleeping in the afternoon might then prevent him from sleeping properly through the night. I would perhaps get in touch with his GP about this and see whether there is anything they could suggest to help him get proper quality sleep so that he feels less exhausted during the day. We have a useful page on our site on tiredness with cancer (fatigue) with tips on managing and treating cancer fatigue and a sub-section on sleeping you might be interested in having a look at.

But as nothing replaces hearing from personal experiences, I will now let our members come and share their stories with you and their experiences on how they dealt with fatigue themselves.

Best wishes to you and your husband and best of luck for his scan next week!
