Financial help - caring for mum with advanced ovarian cancer and daughter has been diagnosed with breast cancer

I’m wondering if anyone can help, my mum has ovarian cancer and unfortunately this has spread to her brain, my daughter has also recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. I have been signed off for the last 7 weeks as its all got too much for me. My mum needs care 24/7 as she’s so unstable  and can’t be left alone. My mum is living with me now and i just don’t feel i can go back to work as my anxiety levels are sky high with  just the thought but i also feel guilty as i know my work is short staff. I would like some advice or reassurance from anyone who has been in a similar situation

  • Hello Melandra

I'm so sorry to hear about all that you and your family are dealing with at the moment. It sounds like it's an incredibly tough time and it's natural that you're struggling.

Have you spoken with your GP about the anxiety that you're feeling? Please do get in touch with them for some advice and support regarding your health. It's important that you look after yourself as well as your loved ones and you might find the information on our website about caring for the carer helpful to read through.

With regards to finances, I'd suggest getting in touch with the Macmillan benefits and financial advice team. It may be that your Mum is able to claim additional benefits and you may be entitled to claim for carers allowance so do have a chat with them for some advice.

There's lots of support available Melandra once you've reached out and hopefully, you will be able to access the areas that you need. If it would help to talk with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
