Does anyone know how my friend can get some psychological support? He has soft tissue sarcoma

Hi there,

My friend has been in hospital for over a month with a soft tissue sarcoma. He already has difficulties with his mental health, in particular OCD.

He doesn't seem to be getting much help psychologically at his hospital. Is there anything anyone can suggest to help get him the support he needs. He is very low and struggling a lot and will be in there for a few more weeks.

Any help would be most appreciated.

  • Hello Danielle

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's diagnosis and that he's been in hospital for an extended period of time. It's obviously a difficult time for him and it's sad to hear that his mental health needs are not being met whilst he's been an inpatient.

Does your friend have a community mental health team that he is under? I wonder if contacting them to express your concerns about his mental health might enable them to reach out to the hospital-based M/H services to help him.

Many hospitals also have access to a specialist cancer psychologist so it's worth asking the hospital staff if this is a service that your friend may be able to access. You can also contact the hospital PALS team to express your concerns.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some support and advice you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that your friend can access the support he needs and that things improve for him.

    Best wishes,
