Just found out foster mum has stage 4 lung cancer - what to expect?

Hi everyone,

On Wednesday my Foster mum (I'm aged 25) was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The doctor said it wasn't curable but just treatable. She is have a biopsy on Monday to see what chemo is the best.

We are all shocked by this and struggling to come to terms with it. We're not sure if it has spread to her bowel (awaiting colonoscopy results).

I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect when caring for her. She is current just very tired with back pain where the large primary site is.

Is it normal for her to be so tired? Should I push her to get out more? I just worry she will end getting in a very dark emotionally that she'll struggle to get out off.

What can I expect when she gets worse?

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Many thanks,

Amy

  • Hi Amy,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm so sorry to hear of the situation with your foster mum - I can imagine this must be a lot to deal with.

It sounds like you are still waiting to get some more information from the doctors about next steps. The doctor will also be best placed to advise about what to potentially expect, and any questions regarding caring for her. Ask any questions you have and talk through anything you want to - and make some notes about what they say - so you can be as prepared and informed as possible.

Our nurses are also available if you'd like to talk things through. You can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Do be sure to keep looking after yourself during all this too. We are always here for support if you need it.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
