Pain in original cancer site after starting chemotherapy

My mum is currently undergoing chemo for treatment of mets to the liver. She is generally pain free now since she got an operation and has been eating well. However as soon as she started the chemo she is now feeling pain in the site where she had initial pain which lead her to be checked for cancer. She has only had one round of chemo so far. Is this normal? Could this be a good thing (cancer is being actively destroyed) or bad?

  • Hi Smeg1,

I am not sure myself what this pain might mean and why it started as soon as she started the chemotherapy treatment but I think it would be worth mentioning it to her medical team who will be able to explain to you whether this was to be expected and if there is anything they could suggest to alleviate the pain. Make sure you tell them that this pain is in the site where she had the initial pain and that it started at the same time as the chemotherapy treatment.

I hope that your mum is continuing to recover well from the operation and that she is still eating well. Any concerns don't hesitate to mention to her specialist or the chemotherapy nurses who look after her.

Feel free too to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 if there is anything you would like to discuss with them - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to answer questions you might have and point you in the right direction.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have experienced something similar during their chemotherapy treatment or who have looked after a loved one in a similar situation as your mum. It helps to talk to others who are in a similar place and who understand what your mum is currently going through.

Best wishes and sending positive vibes for the rest of your mum's chemotherapy treatment,
