I’m new and My Husband had Right Kidney removed due to stage 4 cancer

Hi, I’m new to this but wondered if anyone can tell me if they have had experience of same. He has been told there is no current spread and they got all the cancer out. However, due to the type of Cancer, there is a 30-40% chance of a secondary Cancer returning Unfortunately. He is about to get a CT Scan & start Immunotherapy on 01 August, his kidney was removed on 9th May. He’s 61 and normally fit & well but this has really left him very sore, lethargic and feeling down but I know it takes a good few months to recover. I’m just really scared how high the risk is of the cancer return as everything I read seems to indicate further issues within a year ?

    It's great to hear they managed to remove all the cancer, and that there is no current spread. This must have been wonderful to hear although finding out that there is a 30 - 40% chance of a secondary cancer returning must, naturally, be playing on both your minds.

    Hi Jambo,

    They got all my bowel cancer out, and it hadn't spread but I'm not sure of the percentage chance it will return. To be honest. I just assume it will at some point - until then I'm going to do all the things I enjoy as much as possible. So mainly family holidays!

    It might not be want you want to hear, but take the opportunity to do things you enjoy - the diagnosis is one of the worst things to happen - the removal is a second chance to not worry about what if's and do all those fun things.

    In terms of sore and Lethargic, it will defo take time to recover - he must listen to his body, rest when needed and do things when he's feeling good. it WILL get easier. For me. during chemo and Radio (prior to surgery), I set small goals. ! week down, 2 weeks down, made it weekend with no tablets etc.

    I have a friend who had throat cancer - and it's 12 years ago now and there's no signs of it back. Everyone is different but don't live in fear of it returning. He's beaten it once, he can do it should he need to again.
