Mum with bone metastasis

My mum has recently been told she has secondary ca in her bones. She went off her feet 2 weeks ago due to extreme pain in left hip/femur and was admitted to hospital.

While on ward she sustained a fracture to her femur when being turned in bed and has now had a metal rod put in her leg.

We are hoping she can go home and have some quality of life as her prognosis isn’t good.

As an OT in the community I want to be part of her rehab so have signed myself off work for a month (so far).

I feel so guilty about this.
Also, am I putting too much pressure on myself?

  • Hello Gregoa

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and the recent surgery that she has needed following a fracture. It's understandably a difficult time for you both and natural that you want to make sure that she is as well supported as possible once she returns home.

I presume from your post that you feel guilty about taking the time off work to support your Mum? My apologies if I've misunderstood your post and this isn't what you meant.

I can understand that you want to help and support your Mum, especially as you already have a clinical insight into the importance of what input she may need when she returns home. Only you can decide if taking the time off to be with your Mum is the right or wrong thing for you but in situations like this, I often think how would I answer if a friend who was in similar circumstances came to talk to me. I think then that it can help you to make the decision that you feel is correct.

Presumably, your Mum will come home from the hospital with a care package of some sort. Don't be afraid to talk with the health professionals involved - not just as another health professional but also as a carer and family member. Be honest about any concerns, questions and how you'd like to be involved in her care.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses at any point you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

I hope that your Mum is able to return home soon Gregoa and that things improve for her.

    Best wishes,
