my daughter is only 3 and has ALL and it’s taking a toll on me

my daughter is only 3 and we recently found out about my daughters leukaemia and she’s had a couple rounds of chemo in the time. we were in the children’s hospital for a while and it hurt me so much seeing her plugged to all of those machines. I’m not sure what do do with myself and I really wish to help her but I’m not sure what I can do

  • Hello paninipari,

I am so sorry you and your daughter are having to go through this at such a young age. Words fail me really to describe how upsetting it must to see any child go through this and seeing your own child plugged to machines or going through chemotherapy must be truly heart-breaking. The feeling of powerless must be immense for any parent and the feeling that there isn't much you can do other than being there for her but that is actually a lot, that is what will give your little girl the most comfort, your presence, your love, your care and affection.

Our website has in-depth information on childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and you will find in there a section on coping with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia  (ALL) with a useful list of organisations that can help and you could get in touch with. I hope that you are getting practical support while going through all this especially with things like shopping or looking after other children (if you have other children). Make sure you ask your child’s clinical nurse specialist if they can let you know what support is available. What you are going through is truly emotionally and physically exhausting and it's important that you make sure you get as much support as you can during this difficult time.

I hope that you will hear from others here who also have a child who is currently going through treatment for ALL or perhaps from childhood cancer survivors who are now grown up and happy to share their story with you. It does help to talk to others who understand what you are going through.

We are thinking of you paninipari and wanted you to know you are not alone. I will now let our members come and say hello and shower you here with messages of love and support for your little one and for you who are bravely standing by her side.

    Warmest wishes,
