How to help someone to keep eating and drinking with mouth ulcers

Hello. I've come across this forum as I'm feeling at a loss. My partners mum is going through chemotherapy for breast cancer.

She has always been extremely independent and keeps herself to herself. She lives by herself and has always had issues eating and drinking when alone.

Since starting chemotherapy back in February she's had altered taste and has gone off food and drink She always liked. Instead of finding an alternative she just won't drink anything

She's currently in hospital with explosive diarrhoea and dehydration.  We knew it was coming but she didn't take advice from the nurses at the hospital from initial assessment (I attended for this and she asked me to write it all down so she remembers).

She's just eating occasional ice cream. Hardly drinking, boarking up her medications.

She's back on a drip now and had a few sips to drink while we visited.  She's hopeful she's going home this week but we don't know how best to support her.

I am a nurse and I look after very complex poorly people and I know that ice-cream isn't useful long term for her body to heal.

Thankyou for reading

  • Hi S80abc,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your partner's mum -  this sounds really difficult and I know it can be difficult to understand how best to support someone when they are struggling in this way.

I'm not sure if you're able to have an opportunity to discuss this with her doctor - it would be good to do this if you can to get any advice they may have about this.

We have a section on our website about helping to manage diet problems with cancer - hopefully some of this is useful.

You may find it helpful to have a chat with one of our nurses about this. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Otherwise, hopefully you'll get some more replies from others on the forum soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
