How to help my depressed daughter through ovarian cancer

My daughter is severely depressed after her operation and has had her first chemo cycle, she lives at home with me and I’m struggling in how to help her, she has been given antidepressants but because they didn’t work instantly refused to take them. She has lost a lot of weight and is struggling to eat, can anyone give me some ideas in how to help her, she’s started counselling but it’s just once a week. I really don’t know how to help her see the way forward any advice appreciated.

  • Hi Hadleygirl,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is struggling, and I'm sure this must be taking a toll on you too.

It's good to hear she has started counselling - hopefully this will help. Hopefully a combination of either you or the doctor, or the counsellor, can encourage her to continue with the medication as prescribed, as it may of course take a little longer to have an effect.

I'm sure you are doing a lot to help her already, although the situation sounds difficult. If you haven't already, it may be worth exploring the resources on the Macmillan website. They also have a helpline if you feel you'd like some additional support.

We also have a section on our website about managing diet problems, some of which may be helpful for you and your daughter.

I hope that this forum can be of some support to you - we are always here if you need it.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter ,I can't begin to imagine how hard it must be for you both , if you could persuade her to keep on with the medication it really will help ,it does take a few weeks to work but they definitely take away depression and make everything feel manageable ,look after yourself as well so that you have the strength to get through this x

  • Thank you so much I have finally got her to take the medication, we had a check up today at hospital as she’s lost quite a bit of weight in a week, they gave her fluids as dehydrated and given stronger nausea pills so hopefully she will improve steadily, we’ve never known anyone go through chemo so we’re not really prepared for the afterwards but hopefully she will be well enough for her 2nd round in 2 weeks.

its nice to be able to talk with other people.

  • I'm really pleased to hear that ,yes its a great site there's always someone to talk to ,I hope things get easier for you both as the weeks go by .
