Mum having radiotherapy for mouth cancer. What side effects can we expect?

Hello

My mum will be starting a short course of radiotherapy for mouth cancer next week. Although the hospital have been great and talked us through everything I was looking to get some 1st hand advice on what side affects happened and how long it took to feel better after treatments. Also how I can best help mum recover and anything I can get or do for her that may help through this time.

Thanks so much

  • Hello Ailish83

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's understandably a worrying time for you both and natural that you have questions. It's good to hear that the hospital team has been supportive. Don't be afraid to lean on them for advice and help once Mum starts her treatment as well.

We have some information on our website about radiotherapy for mouth cancer that you may find helpful but I'd also suggest having a look at this thread where many members have shared their experiences of this kind of treatment. In particular, you may find it helpful to read the personal blog that Hazel aka  has shared on that thread. I know that many members who have undergone radiotherapy for oral cancers have found it a useful source of information.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen an offer any advice, information, and support they can. they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your Mum's treatment goes smoothly. Do keep in touch and let us know how you're both getting on.

    Best wishes,

    www.radioactiveeaz.wordpress.com

thf first 2 weeks I could eat pretty much as before treatment started but the issues came overnight ut was a quick as that. Mouth ulcers snd thick mucus I needed a feeding tube up my nose into tummy end of week 3. That was my lifesaver recovery csn be s marathon not a sprint. Once treatment finishes it continued to work for a few weeks. How many is mum having snd us she HPV positive

hope this helid Hazel  as any questions
