Surgery after chemotherapy and radiotherapy

Hi,  have completed our treatment for Ewing's sarcoma.will be having surgery soon.  Just wanted to know how long do they usually wait after last chemo to start operation

  • Hello Sonia

I'm so glad to hear that your son has now completed his chemo and radiotherapy. I know that back in December you mentioned he was well enough to continue with his fitness regime and I hope that he has continued to tolerate his treatment well these past few months.

I would imagine that the team would want to make sure that he is as well as possible ahead of his surgery date but do talk to his nurse specialist to see how long this may be as there could be many factors that influence how long he will be waiting for the operation.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long and that things go well. Please do keep in touch and let us know how you're all doing.

Sending you both my very best wishes for the next phase of his treatment.

  • Hi, thank you for your reply. The reason I ask is how long till after chemo they tend to wait till surgery is we have been given a surgery date which is just 2 weeks after his last chemo. I just think it's too soon and his body needed time to recover. He is just soo weak and wanted him to built up on calories and protein before he undergoes operation but obviously they think it's fine to go ahead

  • Hello Sonia

It's understandable that you have concerns and want to make sure he is as well as possible ahead of the surgery.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses Sonia then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm for some advice and support.

    Best wishes,
