Looking for people's experiences with Methadone

Hi,

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer in October 2022. He has had chemo and radiotherapy, but in January this year we were told there was nothing more they could do.

He has been struggling with pain for the past month or so, he came into the hospice 10 days ago. Initially they used a driver with morphine and morphine injections, but they were not getting on top of the pain so they switched him to methadone a week ago.

It is definitely helping with his pain, but he is now really sleepy, he cannot keep his eyes open and he seems a bit confused. I'm looking for people's experiences with methadone - is this side effects of the drug or is this because we're getting closer to the end?

I'm just trying to prepare myself.

Thanks

  • I'm really sorry to hear that nothing more can be done for your dad S_J_R. This must have been absolutely heart breaking to hear.

I'm glad the methadone is helping with your dad's pain, although I'm sorry for the worries you now have about your dad as a result.

Hopefully some of our members will share their experiences with you soon but in the meantime, you've very welcome to discuss this further with one of our cancer nurses. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all that they can to help.

We're thinking of you S_J_R and are sending all our support to you at this very difficult time.

    Kind regards,
