Treatment for bowel cancer

Hi all. My dad recently got diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer and he now has two options for pre operative treatment.

Option one - 5 weeks of radiation therapy with a week of chemotherapy at the beginning of this treatment.

Option 2 - Xelox given over a three month period which consists of 2 chemotherapy drugs, this is given intravenously and the other in tablet form.

I completely understand everyone reacts differently to treatment but I just wondered if any of you would be willing to share your own experiences with this? Thank you so much for reading :)

  • I have had an operation to remove my  cancer and will be starting chemotherapy very soon it is similar to your dads , and injection and tablet for three months as a mop up , i hope all goes well , i am dreading chemotherapy but feel it’s probably in my best interests

  • I dont know the 2nd option but I do know the first option is the hard core one which will kill of everything in the body for the nest chance. It will make him illl and weak but the body will recover.

The 2nd option sounds softer with tablets so it depends on how bad the cancer is and if you want to try the softer option or go with the first for a safer bet. It's different for everyone, the first option will be a higher success rate but your body does suffer going through it but you do come out the other side. It all depends on how bad the cancer is.

The main thing which I've learnt its all about the mind set which makes a difference. First option will make you weak and tired but once the treatment is out of your system you do go back to yourself. 2nd option sounds like a dilouted and softer version, from my experience attack and attack hard to kill it off but everyone is different.

My dad has had throat cancer for 6 years so I've been through it all!

  • Hello Mezza25,

l am probably not going to be much help since l had an initial 6 weeks of radiotherapy alongside capecitabine tablets pre surgery , followed by 18 weeks ox xelox post surgery. Both were equally destructive but ultimately successful. In a sea of great unknowns l would look to my consultants preferred hardest option because l would be looking for a positive outcome not a slightly easier journey given that all could be tough.

Best wishes for your Dads future,

                                                         David
