Support for carers

For a carer of a cancer patient do I have support?

  • Hello Bookbook,

A warm welcome to our friendly forum. I hope you won't mind but I have changed the title of your thread so that it can be more easily noticed by other carers of cancer patients and therefore you should hopefully get more relevant replies from others and tips for support available to carers.

As many members of our community will know only well, it can be really hard to be a carer but there is a lot of support available which I hope you will be able to reach out for. First of all I will mention our section on our website for Family, friends and caregivers which will give you tips on how to support a loved one with cancer but without crucially forgetting to take care of yourself. You will notice that they mention the option of having respite for carers and the Marie Curie site has information on Respite and Taking a Break which can give carers a much needed and deserved short break. You will also find useful information on the Macmillan site on looking after someone with cancer, practical tips for caring for someone, equipment and home adaptations and financial support available to carers.

I would also strongly recommend you get in touch with Carers UK who give information and support to carers on many issues and have local groups all over the UK.

I hope this gives you a few pointers and I will now let our members who have experience of caring for someone with cancer come and say hello and share their top tips with you on how they themselves got support and the type of support - both practical and emotional - they considered.

    Best wishes,
