Feeling lost and alone

My husband has stage 4 bowel cancer that has metastasized to his liver and the lining of his stomach . He’s currently on Lonsurf 20mgs as all other chemotherapy that he’s had hasn’t worked . He no longer has hospital appointments except for routine scans , nurses come to the house to take his blood and his medication gets delivered. I have so many questions to ask and am struggling with the uncertainty of it all . He’s changed so much and I feel like he’s given up , he sleeps quite a bit and he finds it an effort to do anything. I don’t know who to turn to get my questions answered.
Any advice please ?

  • Hello HallB

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and the situation that you find yourself in. Caring for a loved one can be lonely and it's understandable that you may be feeling adrift in the midst of this situation.

When your husband was given his initial diagnosis, were you given details for a clinical nurse specialist at the hospital? If so then do give them a call as even though your husband doesn't have an appointment there, they will still be a good source of information. You could ask the nurses that visit to take bloods for some advice or alternatively, give his GP a call. Explain how you are feeling and that you have questions about his diagnosis and care and would like to speak with someone.

It sounds like you could do with some additional support so do reach out to someone involved in his care. Or if you find that you're unable to do that, then as a family member or friend if they can make contact with the hospital or GP surgery on your behalf.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you are most welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any help they can.

I do hope that you're able to access some additional support soon. Keep in touch HallB and let us know how you're both doing.

    Best wishes,
