Total disbelief

Hi

First time poster.

My sister in law got diagnosed on Thursday with Stage 4 terminal lung cancer. It has spread to her spine and lymph nodes. This has completely shocked and devastated us as she hasn't even been very ill and is a non smoker. She had a persistent cough at the end of last year with a clear xray in November (turns out the tumour was "hiding" behind her ribs) she is 52, a year younger than me. Her brother, my husband has already lost their dad and two years ago their other sister to Lung cancer , she was only 46. He is not really showing his emotions although I know he is devastated. I can't stop crying and I'm so sad and scared for what happens next, I have never had any experience with dealing with something like this with someone I'm so close to (she is my best friend and like a sister) I just feel so alone and don't know how to help her.

Thank you for reading. It's 2.13am and I can't sleep

  • Hello Yorkbadger and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear about your sister-in-law and how this has impacted the family. It can seem difficult to know what to do one of the most important things during a tough time like this is communication. This will help to strengthen these important relationships and help to process things. Our website has information on advancer lung cancer and advice for family and friends, which you can refer to at any time. We also have a team of nurses available to speak to should you ever wish to. You can call the freephone 0808 800 4040, lines are open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.

    All the best to you,
