Caring for my mum

Hi all

I am new to this chat, i have a bit of a issue and wondering if anyone can give a bit of advice or some tips.

Long story short, my mum was diagnosed with incurable bladder cancer last year, me and my 2 sisters have been her full time carers since. We are now struggling really bad, we have spoke to our mum about this but she doesnt seem to understand that we are struggling to juggle full time work, looking after mum and our own lives.

We have recently managed to get her carers for lunch and dinner to ease the pressure off us a little and so we can do the things we need to do in our own lives.

The issue we have is every single ready meal the carers have done for her she has said she dont like it and wants one of us to go round and cook her food, we have even tried batch cooking and asking a carer tp heat up the food that we have batch cooked, she still said she didnt like it, she said she wants us there to cook her dinner. But we physically cant be there all the time.

Has anyone got any tips or advice on what we can do because we are really struggling and dont know what to do anymore.

Thankyou

  • Hi, my dad has a terminal brain tumour and qualifies for free care in a nursing home. He was also eligible for 24 hour care at home but he needed the 24 hour nursing care that the home offers. This was not means tested. Macmillan rang and told me he was eligible, I had no idea before then. I was panicking how I was going to cope. Contact the Macmillan care coordinator, you should be able to get their contact details through your hospital or doctor. I think it is called  NHS Continuing Healthcare’ (CHC) . Dad wasn't keen on going into the nursing home beforehand but is settled, enjoys the food etc. You can't be there all the time, cooking meals etc, you need support. Hope you get the help you need.

  • do as much as you can for your mum, you’ll only have regrets when she’s gone. Maybe sit down with her and have a rota of days you can and can’t. It’s tough looking after someone with terminal illness

    All the best
