Ups and downs

My husband was diagnosed two year’s ago with Stage 4 bowel cancer which has now spread to his liver.. His operation was not straight forward but after over three weeks in hospital he came home weak but determined to get stronger. He is now on his 15th round of chemo. He is very fatigued at times but when he is well we try and do something nice like go for lunch or a walk.
At times I find it all very overwhelming and extremely sad to watch him struggle with fatigue and other side effects. I do talk with a very close friend but I am holding back from saying too much to my sons as I suppose I am trying protect them.

  • Hello July1975,

I'm sorry to hear about your husband and how this is affecting you. It's good to hear you have a friend to talk to, it's ok to lean on them when you need to talk about how you're feeling. I can imagine that it's difficult to talk to your sons at times, especially if they're young. There is some good advice on talking to children about cancer on our website and some guidance on the caregivers page, which you can refer to at anytime. Cancer Chat is here whenever you need it and we have a team of nurses available, if you ever wish to speak to someone. You call on the freephone 0808 800 4040, lines are open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes to you,
