What do I do

My mum was issued with a Section 21 notice to vacate her house, her landlords want to turn it into an Airbnb. We have known for a few months but despite our searches, we haven't been able to find anywhere suitable as she has severe COPD and everything has stairs or a bath when a shower is required. Trouble is we now only have 6 weeks before she has to leave. This week she was told she had lung cancer after going in for a routine x-ray, she was told she probably wouldn't survive treatment & was given only months to live. The housing people and social services have done nothing to help, she is number 98 on the waiting list for assisted accommodation. My house has stairs and no downstairs bathroom and no shower so I can't look after her. She is not ill enough to go into a hospice. I just don't what to do, the stress is getting to her and it is so upsetting. I want to make mums last month's as stress free as possible and we are sat here amongst packing boxes just crying. Any advice

  • Hi abi963,

I'm so sorry to hear of this difficult situation, this sounds incredibly tough and unfair.

Please have a look at the Citizens Advice website, where you can find some information and you can also speak to an adviser.

There is also quite a bit of information on this page of the Shelter website which may be useful. They also have a helpline and a webchat service where you can speak to someone.

You may be able to get some respite care for your mum in a local hospice while things are being sorted out. It may be worth checking if your local hospice offers short-term respite accommodation, as that may give you both some time to arrange a solution.

We hope you are able to get this resolved and that the above support options are helpful.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
