HER2+ cancer and elevated cancer levels

my mother in law was just diagnosed with HER2 (3+) cancer a couple of weeks ago after finding a lump in late December…  it is now 4.5 cm

She seems fine at this time symptom-wise, thankfully.  However, her latest blood work has come back with elevated calcium..  looking at the internet research, this is a pretty dire sign, but can this be a false sign?    Anyone have a story of hypercalcemia that turned out not to be a cancer having spread beyond the breast?

  • Hello HuChat,

I am sorry to hear that your mum has been diagnosed recently with HER2 (3+) cancer and that her latest blood tests have flagged elevated calcium. I hope that you will find out more soon from your mum's medical team as to what it all means. Try if you can not to research too much online or it might be very stressful for you and not give you reliable answers. Our website however has an in-depth section on cancer and blood calcium levels where you will find out more about hypercalcaemia and high calcium in people with cancer. It does mention that "high blood calcium levels sometimes happen if your cancer is advanced and is less likely to happen if your cancer is at an early stage" but you won't know really about your mum's individual case until you have spoken to the specialists and the information on our website also specifies that it is important to contact your mum's medical team about this high cancer level so that they can take action quickly and hopefully start her treatment soon.

I hope that you will meet others here who have been affected by hypercalcaemia in any way and that they will come and share their story with you. Do talk to your mum's consultant as soon as you can as they will be in the best position to tell you more about whether this is indicative of advanced cancer in your mum's case or if there could be other explanations for it. Feel free also to talk things through with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you find out more soon about what is causing these high calcium levels and what her treatment plan might be.

    Best wishes,
