Mum in Palliative care

Hi. Mum was diagnosed with kidney cancer back in September 23. Drs said nothing they could do. Just palliative care. Gave mum 6-12 months. Up until Jan she’s been doing ok. But now. Sleeping all the time. Hardly eating or drinking. So restless. We’ve seen a massive difference in a few weeks. She’s deteriorating rapidly.
so scared she’s in her final weeks now. What can I do

  • Hi hin,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis and that she has been deteriorating so much recently. It must be heart-breaking for you and her loved ones to see her sleeping all the time and hardly eating or drinking. It's so sad how it can all suddenly change in the space of just a few weeks. Our website has resources which may help. Looking after someone in the last few weeks of their life can be a huge emotional and physical challenge and it is important to take time for yourself and find the support you need. Our section on Dying with Cancer can be a difficult read but it has useful advice to help you cope during this difficult time.

Marie Curie have a lot of helpful resources including a helpline where you can talk to a professional so don't hesitate to get in touch with them for information and support.

We're thinking of you and your mum during this challenging time and wanted you to know that you are not alone. I will now let our forum members come and say hello and share their story and suggestions with you based on their own sad experiences of looking after a loved one who is in palliative care.

    Best wishes,
