Liver Resection

My father has had to have 2 liver resections over the past 2 weeks removing 2/3 the first time. He also buried his brother the week before. It's been a tough time for him and for someone usually caring for others, a strong leader and ambitious man, he's withdrawn and flat. He's weak and not eating much food at all. The surgeon says keep positive with him but it's like talking to a totally different person. Any advice great fully received.

  • Hello Antonia_K

I'm sorry to hear about all that your Dad has been through over the past few weeks, both physically with multiple surgeries and also with the loss of his brother. It undoubtedly has been a difficult time for him and it sounds as if things really have taken their toll on you all.

It can be hard when a loved one is struggling with their health, particularly if that person changes to become someone that we're not used to seeing. Maintaining a positive outlook can be hard for both the person going through treatment and those around them. Keep trying to encourage your Dad and hopefully as he continues to recover physically from his surgeries he will begin to improve in other aspects as well.

I don't know if your Dad was allocated a clinical nurse specialist after his diagnosis but they are often a good source of support and it's worth talking to them if you have concerns about your Dad. It may be that they can speak with him and possibly even refer him for specialist counselling support if this is something that they both feel may be helpful.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I do hope that things improve for you all soon.

    Best wishes,
