Supporting SEN pupil with Mum's breast cancer diagnosis

Hi all , does anyone know who i can go to for advice and guidance? I work in a Special needs school looking after 2-19 yr olds . I work as an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant and have a pupil who is in his teens whose mum has breast cancer and is due to start treatment (chemotherapy)hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I want to fully support the pupil emotionally to the best of my ability and I am seeking guidance . Hoping some one can help.

  • Hi Tess132,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

There is some guidance on this page from Macmillan - in particular the point about explaining any possible changes in routines based on what his mum will be going through, and preparing them also for any physical changes that his mum may go through.

There is also an organisation called Fruitfly Collective who offer training to people in education, which may be of some use.

Otherwise, if others here have any experience or advice to offer then hopefully you'll get some more replies soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
